General Information

Around 95 % of classified highways are constructed with an asphalt surfacing layer. The construction class and thus the road pavement design are selected according to the traffic loading. This ensures that a solution can be found that is tailored to the loading conditions and is both technically satisfactory and economically justifiable. The rapid increase in car and HGV traffic in recent years has led to increasing levels of road damage.

The consequences of poor road conditions are ever shorter maintenance intervals, localised cases of overloading, traffic restrictions and accident blackspots.

To combat these effects, “technical textiles” such as asphalt reinforcement grids have been successfully employed in road construction since the 1980s. In the meantime, a wealth of experience has been compiled in the form of technical recommendations for the use of asphalt inlays and in regulations such as the FGSV Working Paper No. 69. BEBIT is our product range that has been developed in line with these principles.

BEBIT G is a woven grid that has high tensile strength and is made of glass fibres with a melting point above 850 °C. The fibre bundles are encased in a bitumen coating.

BEBIT G Asphalt Reinforcement Grids have an extremely high constrained modulus that allows the immediate absorption of high tensile forces with minimum elongation. This results in the concentration of stresses in the asphalt layer and the immediate activation of the reinforcement. The open structure of BEBIT grids ensures optimum bonding between the layers.

BEBIT G PLUS Asphalt Reinforcement Grids belong to the BEBIT G range and have an additional layer of mesh infill made of glass roving. This type of grid offers a real bonus with regard to functionality and ease of installation, without having to resort to dual-component materials.

The mesh infill makes laying particularly easy and cost-effective. No additional bitumen emulsion or otherwise customary spreading of chippings is required.

BEBIT G Asphalt Reinforcement Grids are capable of absorbing the tensile forces in multi-layer asphalt constructions. This prevents or minimises the propagation of existing cracks (so-called reflection cracks) through to the overlying asphalt layer.

In this case, the term reinforcement means the absorption of tensile forces within the plane of the asphalt inlay. In contrast to the reinforcement of unbound sub-base layers, the asphalt reinforcement is not placed in the tension zone of the road pavement and therefore does not perform the task of dissipating the stresses caused by traffic loading as its primary function.

Its function is to restrict the movement of crack boundaries or joint edges in the interface between the base layer and the overlying asphalt layer.

When bonded correctly, the reinforcement prevents the cracks from opening. The reinforced system thus has an improved load-bearing capacity and its useful life is significantly increased in comparison to systems with no reinforcement.

The extended functions of BEBIG G PLUS offer decisive advantages during installation. In combination with a suitable bitumen emulsion, the closed structure of the grid created by the glass roving improves the bond with the subsurface during laying.

Asphalt reinforcement materials are also used in situations where asphalt layers are subject to extreme fluctuations in temperature, since these conditions are liable to promote crack formation. Asphalt sealing systems in water engineering, landfill sites and agricultural silo systems are thus also suitable fields of application for BEBIT Asphalt Reinforcement Grids.

BEBIT G Asphalt Reinforcement Grids are available in different strength categories ranging from 50 kN/m to 200 kN/m. The choice of strength category depends on the type of application, the type of damage, and the traffic loading.

Several factors play a decisive role in the selection of BEBIT G Asphalt Reinforcement Grids. These factors include:

Installation of BEBIT Asphalt Reinforcement Grids

Installation of BEBIT Asphalt Reinforcement Grids

  1. Before installation can begin, the surface on which the grids are to be laid must be checked to ensure adequate evenness and must be also be cleaned. If any cracks, joints or other holes become visible, these must be sealed.
  2. Immediately before laying the asphalt reinforcement, the clean, dry subsurface must be sprayed with a polymer-modified bitumen emulsion of grade C60BP1-S in accordance with TL BE StB 07.
    The subsurface temperature should not be less than 5 °C and the air temperature must be at least 10 °C during laying.
  3. BEBIT asphalt inlays must be laid into the bitumen emulsion layer after the emulsion has broken. They must be laid in dry weather only and without creasing.
  4. A road surfacing layer of at least 40 mm must be laid on top of the asphalt inlay immediately after the bitumen emulsion has dried.

After resurfacing the road, there is a risk that these existing cracks can also propagate through the new asphalt surfacing layer within a short space of time. BEBIT asphalt reinforcement grids have been used successfully for many years to prevent the development of these so-called reflection cracks. They are laid as a reinforcing layer between the original pavement and the new surfacing.
