General Information

Non-woven fabrics belong to a category of construction materials that can influence the function of structural elements and even affect the stability of entire structures. Special applications in civil engineering require some form of differentiation in order to ensure that the right non-woven fabric is selected. This generally goes beyond a simple classification or dimensioning system. The requirements to be met by the non-woven fabric must be established by calculation. In order to be able to demonstrate the suitability of a product, the choice must be made from a range of high-quality non-woven fabrics with appropriate technical properties.

BONTEC NW Non-woven Fabrics are manufactured from high-quality polypropylene spun fibres in one of the most modern production plants in Europe. This polymer has high chemical resistance, even to aggressive media such as those with a high pH value.

In contrast to conventional, purely mechanically bonded products, BONTEC NW Non-woven Fabrics are also thermally treated, in a second production stage. This combines the advantages of mechanically bonded non-woven fabrics, namely flexibility, effective filtering and protection, with the robustness and tensile strength of thermally bonded products.

Fuctionality of BEFORCE NW Non-woven Fabrics


Separation, filtration and protection are the primary functions performed by BONTEC NW Non-woven Fabrics in complex civil engineering structures and in traffic infrastructure.


BONTEC NW Non-woven Fabrics secure the interfaces with other structural components and between different types of soil. During installation and when the completed structure is use, they also prevent the different materials from becoming mixed as a result of external mechanical loading. This helps to maintain the original quality of the fill material in the long term, particularly with regard to its grain distribution.

The filtration effect of a non-woven fabric becomes important when, in addition to separation, it is also necessary to contend with flowing water. In such cases, the structure relies on both the separation and filtration functions of the fabric.

The fill material grain shape and distribution that ensure high load-bearing capacity and good compaction can present a problem where filtration is concerned. In this case, a suitable filter must be used that can keep the soil in place and drain away pore water without any significant raising of the phreatic line.

This combination of mechanical and hydraulic filtration efficiency can be said to be properly dimensioned if erosion and suffosion of the fill material is prevented and the colmation of the filter material remains minimal.

The thermally bonded surface of mechanically-bonded BONTEC NW Non-woven Fabrics ensures an adequately dimensioned, evenly distributed characteristic mesh width and sufficient water permeability.

The protection function is independent of the separation and filtration functions. In this case, the purpose is to protect a structure or a sealing membrane from mechanical damage.

Such protection may be required, for example, when concreting or when positioning coarse-grain mineral construction materials.

Here, BONTEC NW Non-woven Fabrics provide a high level of effective protection in relation to their mass per unit area. They can absorb the effects of point loads and shear forces.

Geotextile robustness classes for non-woven fabrics

Non-woven fabrics are assigned to geotextile robustness classes 1 to 5. Their use is specified in the "Merkblatt über die Anwendung von Geokunststoffen im Erdbau des Straßenbaues M Geok E, 2005" (Leaflet on the use of geosynthetics in earthworks for highway construction), which ensures correct selection and handling by everyone involved in the construction process.

Class value: Requirement for a 5 % minimum quantile of the static puncture resistance and mass per unit area.

Application areas of th BONTEC NW Non-woven Fabrics


BONTEC NW Non-woven Fabrics are used in cases where flowing pore water could cause the fine-grain particles of one soil layer to mix with coarse-grain particles of the neighbouring soil.This is always the case, for example, where cohesive soils are in contact with granular soils or where well-graded soils and poorly graded soils with different maximum grain sizes are laid in layers.

These types of application present particular challenges for the non-woven filtration fabric. Special guidelines are available for the different applications of non-woven filtration fabrics and these should be consulted when selecting products. Guidelines for the use of non-woven fabrics in road construction are contained in the "Merkblatt über die Anwendung von Geokunststoffen im Erdbau des Straßenbaues M Geok E" (Leaflet on the use of geosynthetics in earthworks for highway construction).

Reference to these guidelines is also made in the recommendations of “Geotechnik der Deponien und Altlasten” (Geotechnical Aspects of Landfill and Brownfield Sites) published by the DGGT (German Society for Geotechnical Engineering).

All the different guidelines stress the need to take into account the specific requirements of the particular application when selecting a geosynthetic. In the design stage, this involves determining the grain size distribution of the soil to be filtered, its water permeability and the expected turbulent or laminar water flow. These input variables are used to check the mechanical filtration efficiency (soil retention capacity) and the hydraulic filtration efficiency (water drainage) in the application in question.

DIn order to ensure that non-woven fabrics continue to perform their intended function within the structure after installation, geosynthetics are assigned to geotextile robustness classes (GRK) in accordance with M Geok E (Leaflet on the use of geosynthetics in earthworks for highway construction). These classes take into account the method of installation and the type of fill material used. The various non-woven fabrics in the BONTEC NW range, with their different mass per unit area and corresponding static puncture resistance values, cover all GRK classes.

Installation information for BONTEC NW Non-woven Fabrics:

  1. The subsoil should be as flat and even as possible in order to ensure full contact with the fabric across the entire surface.
  2. The fabric must be laid flat and free of creases. Creases resulting from the shape of the structure should be removed by cutting the fabric and allowing it to overlap.
  3. The fill material must be installed in accordance with the previously determined GRK class, since the non-woven fabric was selected on this basis. The covering of the non-woven fabric with soil can be easily slotted into the construction schedule within a two-week period.
  4. When filling and compacting material on top of the fabric, care must be taken to prevent displacement or creasing of the fabric.
