When constructing or repairing flood protection dykes, it is not always possible to use the dyke dimensions recommended in DIN 19712 “Flood protection works on rivers”, as with HWS 1.0 and HWS 2.0 systems. Space is often limited due to existing structures, public resistance to unattractive structures or environmental protection restrictions.

Such cases demand special solutions that meet the flood protection requirements to the highest degree while keeping the financial outlay as low as possible.

System solutions of this kind are adapted individually to meet the specific requirements of the location, which means that they cannot be predefined in a general way.

TERRABENT is a sealed reinforced earth structure with a 70° slope that is suitable for planting. The system is a combination of the structurally effective GREEN TERRAMESH slope reinforcement system and the BENTOMAT geosynthetic clay liner.

TERRABENT is a sealed reinforced earth structure with a 70° slope that is suitable for planting. The system is a combination of the structurally effective GREEN TERRAMESH slope reinforcement system and the BENTOMAT geosynthetic clay liner.

The solution, therefore, combines a sealing effect, in line with the German guidelines for structural measures on roads in water protection areas (RiStWag), with a stable and erosionresistant 70° slope. This intelligent construction method enables a wide range of application options that would previously have been extremely difficult to construct.

Applications of TERRABENT

Applications of TERRABENT

TERRABENT system solutions make it possible to construct very steep slopes and wall structures, which can also be effectively sealed. This means TERRABENT is particularly suitable for use as a flood protection structure.

Flood protection walls are usually made of concrete or steel due to space restrictions. This type of structure, however, does not always please the aesthetic sensibilities of local residents and developers. TERRABENT
offers a visually attractive type of construction that also functions as an extremely well sealed earth structure.

In addition, the TERRABENT system makes it possible to protect river-banks by constructing slopes that also have a sealing effect. Basins, such as reservoirs, can be constructed with particularly steep slopes, at relatively low expense, in order to utilise the available area to its fullest extent.

An issue of increasing importance with regard to water engineering structures is their resistance to rodent damage caused by beavers and water rats. The steel elements of the system provide ideal protection. This has been verified in field trials.

Installation of TERRABENT system solutions

TERRABENT system solutions should only be installed by qualified personnel who can produce evidence of at least the following qualifications:

  • Responsible foreman who is employed by the contractor and already has experience in constructing earthwork structures with a similar level of difficulty
  • The contractor's employees have been briefed by a BECO Bermüller representative, or by an earthworks specialist authorised by BECO Bermüller, on how to install TERRABENT system solutions.

The entire construction process must be supervised and approved by a structural engineer in order to verify that the work has been carried out properly and to ensure that the TERRABENT system solution functions correctly
