General information

Soil stabilisation and the construction of reinforced earth structures have long been important aspects of civil engineering. Today, modern techniques and innovative materials enable even extremely complex structures to be built and technologically sophisticated construction works to be carried out.

The areas of application cover a broad spectrum, from traditional subgrade stabilisation through to noise barriers, embankments and wall structures.

One area that presents a special challenge with regard to slope stabilisation is the construction of extremely steep embankments and wall structures. The reinforcement must be designed to provide the structure with adequate stability, to ensure internal and external stability against collapse and to protect the exposed surface against erosion.

In the meantime, infrastructure elements also have to fulfil increasing expectations regarding their appearance and ecological compatibility, whilst also being financially viable. TERRAMESH system solutions, made of innovative steel wire elements, offer a reliable and economic alternative to traditional construction methods using concrete.

The reinforcing material in TERRAMESH systems comprises a mesh made of double twisted steel wire. It has duplex protection, consisting of a thick galvanised GalMac alloy coating and an additional PVC coating.

With the TERRAMESH system solution, the reinforcement is positioned and the face of the structure formed in one continuous construction process. The defining parameters, such as the inclination, anchor length and appearance of the slope face, can be tailored to the individual structure.

Thanks to their prefabricated and pre-assembled elements, all TERRAMESH systems are quick and easy to install. No special knowledge or machinery is required. Construction progress is swift, even with a small workforce and minimum use of machinery. In addition to the economic advantages of TERRAMESH, these systems also reduce the effects of the works and the structure on the public and the environment.

The key characteristics of TERRAMESH systems are resilience, reliability and a long service life. These quality standards are reflected in the choice of materials used, as well as in the production and project planning processes.

Functionality of TERRAMESH System Solutions


Function

TERRAMESH system solutions are based on the construction principle of laying reinforcement grids in layers with layers of soil or aggregate. This creates a reinforced earth structure.

All TERRAMESH systems involve the installation of layers of steel wire mesh in accordance with the structural design and with the necessary anchor lengths and a vertical spacing of up to 100 cm.

There are two different TERRAMESH systems:

  • TERRAMESH SYSTEM – back-tied gabion front
  • TERRAMESH GREEN – rear-anchored steep slope reinforcement suitable for planting

The back-tied TERRAMESH SYSTEM with gabions comprises a steel wire mesh that forms the rear-anchored tail and the base, facing and lid of the gabions.

TERRAMESH GREEN is a steep slope reinforcement system suitable for planting and installed using the fold-over principle. The steel wire mesh folds over to encase the soil layer above it and the permanent formwork necessary to secure the facing, made of structural steel, with the prefabricated erosion control mat.

The elements forming the face of the slope can be filled with stone instead of soil, if required.

TERRAMESH Green

TERRAMESH GREEN is a prefabricated modular system made of hexagonal double-twisted wire mesh with duplex protection. The system components comprise a wire mesh with a welded steel grid mat, pre-bent inclination triangles made of round steel, bracing hooks made of round steel and an erosion control mat. All of the components are pre-assembled in the factory and are simply positioned on site and filled with suitable soil.

Two different types of erosion control mat are available. The EARTH version has an erosion control mat made of coconut mesh, and the WATER version has a rotproof, synthetic, non-woven mat. In order to provide the most cost-effective solution possible, two types of steel wire mesh are available, with different long-term tensile strengths. The LIGHT version has a long-term tensile strength of at least 35 kN/m and the STANDARD version at least 50 kN/m.

All TERRAMESH GREEN systems can be used for a wide range of support structures with a slope face suitable for planting and a resulting inclination of 45 – 70°.

  • Slope reinforcement with a planted face and inclination of 45°, 60°, 65° or 70°
  • Double-sided waterside structures (WATER version) with 45° or 60° inclination
  • Reinforced noise barriers

TERRAMESH System

The TERRAMESH SYSTEM  is a prefabricated modular system made of hexagonal double-twisted wire mesh with duplex protection. The SYSTEM comprises a gabion front that is folded into shape on site and a rear-anchored tail made of steel wire. All of the components are pre-assembled in the factory and form a single, rigid unit.

The TERRAMESH SYSTEM can be used for a wide range of support structures with stone facing and a resulting inclination of 45 – 90°.

Applications for the TERRAMESH SYSTEM:

  • Slope reinforcement with a stepped face of up to 70°
  • Reinforced walls, from 70° to 90°
  • Double-sided waterside structures
  • Reinforced noise barriers

Installation instructions GREEN

Installation instructions for TERRAMESH Green:

  1. Align the elements where they are to be installed.
  2. Fold out and carefully lay the pre-assembled anchoring tail section (Fig. f).
  3. Fold open the upper section and then fold out the pre-assembled inclination triangles behind the front face as supports (Fig. g).
  4. Take the loosely packed bracing hooks and hook them into the front and base sections (Fig. h).
  5. If using the TERRAMESH GREEN system, backfill with topsoil and fill material in two layers by end-tipping and compact the material (Fig. i).
  6. Fold the top layer of mesh over and fix it to the compacted layer of material (Fig. j).
  7. Position the next layer of elements on the layer already installed and fix them to the adjacent and underlying elements using ties.
  8. Repeat the above steps until the topmost layer has been installed.

Installation instructions SYSTEM

Installation instructions for the TERRAMESH System Solutions:

  1. Align the elements where they are to be installed.
  2. Fold out and carefully lay the pre-assembled anchoring tail section (Fig. a).
  3. Fold back the body of the gabion (Fig. b).
  4. Lift up the front panel of the gabion and connect it to the body section (Fig. c).
  5. Fill the gabions with rock (Fig. d).
  6. Fold the top layer of mesh over to form the lid panel of the gabion and connect it to the side panels
    (Fig. e).
  7. Backfill behind the gabions by means of “end tipping” and compact the material.
  8. Position the next layer of elements on the layer already installed and fix them to the adjacent and underlying elements using ties.
  9. Repeat the above steps until the topmost layer has been installed.
