BEBIT Asphalt Reinforcement Grids

General information about BEBIT Asphalt Reinforcement Grids

A proven solution for highway pavement construction

Increasing traffic loads, high summer temperatures, and freeze-thaw cycles in conjunction with penetrating surface water cause vertical and horizontal deformation of the road surface. Over a number of years, these influences often result in undesirable cracks in the pavement.

After resurfacing the road, there is a risk that these existing cracks can also propagate through the new asphalt surfacing layer within a short space of time. BEBIT asphalt reinforcement grids have been used successfully for many years to prevent the development of these so-called reflection cracks. They are laid as a reinforcing layer between the original pavement and the new surfacing.

Functionality of BEBIT Asphalt Reinforcement Grids

Functionality

BEBIT asphalt reinforcement grids exhibit both high tensile strength and low elongation. BEBIT asphalt reinforcement grids absorb the tensile stresses that develop in the surfacing layer and dissipate them over the entire area. This verifiably delays the formation of cracks and thus significantly extends maintenance intervals.

BEBIT asphalt reinforcement grids are high-strength, flexible, woven meshes made of either polyester yarn with a melting point of approximately 240°C or low-creep glass fibres with a melting point above 850°C. The grids are coated with a material with good bitumen affinity which ensures excellent bonding of the layers. Glass fibres can be easily recycled, which means that the road surfacing can be planed off at a later date and the material reused.

In order to improve bonding with the base layer during the construction phase, BEBIT G plus asphalt reinforcement grids have an additional layer of glass roving, which makes them particularly easy to lay and ensures an even stronger bond between the layers.

Installation requirements for BEBIT Asphalt Reinforcement Grids

Installation requirements

BEBIT asphalt reinforcement grids must always be laid between two asphalt layers. If the base layer is not asphaltic, an asphalt-bound intermediate layer must be laid before the grid can be installed.

BEBIT must be laid on a flat subsurface. If necessary, a bituminous regulating course must first be laid to ensure that the BEBIT is laid flat.

Pre-spraying with a binder ensures a firm bond between the pavement layers. Here adhesives and bitumen emulsions provide environmentally and technically sound solutions.

BEBIT is usually laid (with the aid of an unwinding unit) manually or using suitable vehicles.

With BEBIT G plus, no pretensioning of the asphalt reinforcement grid or fixing in place at intervals with bolts is required.

Comprehensive instructions for laying the grids can be found in the latest version of the BEBIT installation instructions. These instructions must be made available to the managers and construction staff on site.

The regulations and standards relating to asphalt pavement construction still apply where BEBIT asphalt reinforcement grids are used.
