BEDRAIN Drainage Grids

General information about BEDRAIN Drainage Grids

Resilient drainage grids for high-performance drainage

BEDRAIN drainage grids are sturdy plastic grids made of extruded HDPE with a non-woven fabric bonded to one or both sides of the grid across its entire area. The grids have excellent tear and fracture resistance coupled with minimum elongation. The HDPE raw material used is highly resistant to all substances found in the soil and to chlorinated hydrocarbons.

BEDRAIN Drainage Grids

BEDRAIN drainage grids are therefore also suitable for draining liquids and gases in surface sealing systems in landfill engineering applications. Various types of grid are available in two different thicknesses.
BEDRAIN drainage grids have high compressive strength, which means that even under relatively heavy loading the drainage performance is only minimally affected. BEDRAIN drainage grids are supplied in rolls and are laid with butt joints, with negligible losses at cuts. This enables fast and cost-effective installation on the construction site.

A further advantage of the high loading capacity of BEDRAIN drainage grids is that construction vehicles can drive directly over the grids during the installation phase. The high-performance of BEDRAIN drainage grids makes them especially effective in drainage applications where height restrictions apply, such as multi-storey car parks, green spaces above underground car parks, and patios and paved areas. Other applications include landfill sites, retaining structures and foundation wall protection.

BEDRAIN VGV3 Drainage Grids

BEDRAIN VGV 1 - B has been specially developed for use as a drainage layer on bridge abutments. This 5-mm-thick drainage grid satisfies the requirements of specification drawing "WAS 7", issued by the German Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development.

Functionality of BEDRAIN Drainage Grids

Bridge abutments

When constructing bridge structures, it is important to ensure that they function for a very long period. The concrete and reinforcing materials must be permanently protected. In the past it was customary to use concrete filter blocks, which had to be laid manually at great expense. BEDRAIN drainage grids in roll form are considerably cheaper and provide a higher quality solution. The non-woven fabric bonded to the grid ensures that excellent filtration properties are maintained over a long service life.

Retaining walls

As with all structures that are in contact with soil, retaining walls must be protected from attack by surface water and groundwater. This applies particularly to concrete components, which are at risk in the long term due to corrosion.

Basements

Dampness in walls and basements results in undesirable structural damage, which is very costly to repair. Even carefully applied sealing coatings cannot provide adequate protection. Expanded polystyrene drainage panels are not durable and rot within just a few years. BEDRAIN drainage grids are supplied in roll form, which makes them particularly cost-effective to install. Polyethylene is rotproof, ecologically harmless and can be recycled.

Landfill sites

Landfill sites are constructed, according to the relevant regulations, with a base sealing layer and, after filling, a surface sealing layer on top. In special cases, a double sealing layer is constructed at the base. In such cases, a BEDRAIN drainage grid is laid between two polymeric geomembranes to allow any drained water to be tested. Landfill site surfaces are usually recultivated and planted. To ensure the stability of the landfill structure, surface water that collects on the sealed surface must be drained away. BEDRAIN drainage grids with two layers of non-woven fabric (fabric-grid-fabric) are ideally suited to this purpose.

Paved surfaces

Wherever possible, the surfaces above underground structures such as tunnels, underground car parks and water tanks are landscaped to create green spaces. However, where land is valuable or scarce, these areas are also frequently used for paths, roads or parking spaces. Whether planted or paved, these areas have the same essential requirement for drainage. Even if there is no vegetation to be protected from water logging, the surface water that penetrates through joints or pores must still be drained away effectively. In the case of specially sealed structures, particular care must be taken in order to prevent structural damage. This calls for "intelligent" geosynthetics that provide protection and drainage and are also highly resistant and robust. BEDRAIN drainage grids fulfil these requirements perfectly.
