General information about BENTOMAT Geosynthetic Clay Liners

Geosynthetic clay liners (bentonite mats) are composite geotextile materials that have been in use for many years as a successful natural sealing method.

BENTOMAT geosynthetic clay liners are normally made up of three components:

the geotextile top layer,
the granulated bentonite and
the geotextile base layer.

Functionality of BENTOMAT Geosynthetic Clay Liners (bentonite mats)

All BENTOMAT geosynthetic clay liners (bentonite mats) are mechanically bonded by needle-punching over their entire area to create an homogeneous product.

The bentonite (clay material) used largely determines the quality of the geosynthetic clay liner.

Bentonites are clays consisting mainly of montmorillonite, which is a highly expansive clay mineral. High quality bentonites in granular form are used in the manufacture of the different types of BENTOMAT. This ensures that the bentonite stores well and prevents material loss and rearrangement during transport and installation.

BENTOMAT CL has been specially developed for applications with particularly stringent requirements in terms of sealing performance. This innovative product has a synthetic sealing membrane bonded across the entire area of the bentonite mat, earning BENTOMAT CL its description as a “combination sealing system”.

The additional sealing membrane brings several advantages:

The sealing effect of BENTOMAT CL is higher than that of conventional bentonite mats by a factor of between 10 and 100.
The entire sealed surface is impervious to root penetration.
Undesired drying out is effectively prevented
