Precaution and planning
Due to the recurrence of floods of the century at ever shorter intervals, hydraulic structures with a protective or retention function must be redimensioned and adapted to the increased requirements.
The increasing sealing of surfaces in urban areas also requires the creation of additional retention space away from the catchment areas of rivers at risk of flooding.

Applications
Dam with geosynthetic clay liner
Geobuilding materials can fulfil various tasks in the construction, raising and renovation of dyke structures. The main task for trapezoidal dyke structures is to effectively prevent seepage of the dyke body that could jeopardise its stability. Other tasks include erosion protection, protection against burrowing animals, reinforcement against sliding parallel to the embankment and protection of the sealing component.

Trenches and buffer systems
The creation of underground buffer and retention areas must become one of the central themes of modern urban planning. Infiltration trenches and buffer systems are suitable for this purpose. Stretched nodular geogrids can be used to distribute damaging point loads more evenly over the systems. Another system component, especially for car parks, can be heavy-duty, infiltration-capable turf honeycomb systems.

Base sealing in polders/flood troughs
The proximity to bodies of water is often accompanied by groundwater close to the surface. This can lead to considerable difficulties in earthworks. This is why near-surface solutions without deep earthworks are required for sealing the bed of watercourses, polders and flood troughs.

Products for flood protection
BENTOMAT Geosynthetic Clay Liner
Geosynthetic clay liners (GTD), also known as bentonite mats, are geotextile composites that enclose a mineral sealing component made of highly swellable bentonite between two needled geotextile layers. The products are suitable for flood protection where a sealing effect is required and the application of a ballast layer against the swelling of the bentonite is possible.
BETEX NW Non-woven Fabrics
The mechanically bonded and thermally post-treated BETEX NW nonwovens in geotextile robustness classes GRK 3 to 5 are made from high-quality polypropylene staple fibres (PP). The high demands placed on geotextile separation, filter and protection layers in civil engineering and hydraulic engineering are met thanks to the good mechanical and hydraulic properties of BETEX NW nonwovens.
BETEX TP Non-woven Fabrics
Thanks to their purely mechanical bonding, BETEX TP nonwovens offer very good technical solutions for filter and protection applications in civil engineering and hydraulic engineering.
BEGRID TG Geogrid
BEGRID TG geogrids are biaxially stretched, node-rigid geogrids made of polypropylene. Their monolithic structure and rigid cell geometry create an optimum frictional bond (interlocking) with the matched base course material, so that vertical loads are evenly distributed and transferred horizontally. As a result, initial trafficability can be achieved without major excavation work, even if the ground is heavily waterlogged.
BEMAT Erosion Control Mats
BEMAT claw mats are three-dimensional erosion control mats consisting of a tangled layer of polypropylene monofilaments (PP). During the growth of vegetation, erosion channels are avoided, the soil is fixed and secured against washing out.
MACMAT R and R.E.C.S. COCCO erosion control mats
MACMAT R and R.E.C.S. COCCO are combined burrowing/erosion protection products made from double-twisted steel wire mesh with optional polymer coating and erosion protection made from synthetic or natural fibres. In addition to securing the topsoil layer until the embankment grows, they offer proven protection against burrowing and burrowing animals.
RENO PLUS Mattresses
RENO PLUS river mattresses are used as an effective method of securing embankments and river beds. The products are low-thickness, box-like structures made of a continuous steel wire mesh with a subdivision into chambers, which are filled with stones after unfolding. River mattresses are flexible and adapt perfectly to irregular river banks. They can be completely planted with vegetation and thus fulfil the requirements for near-natural riparian habitats.
River mattresses offer long-term protection against burrowing animals and thus serve as reliable bank protection.
TERRAMESH steep slope systems
With TERRAMESH system solutions, steep slopes with front inclinations of up to 90° can be realised. The system consists of a reinforcing, duplex-protected steel wire mesh, a stiffening structural steel or gabion steel mat as permanent formwork, articulated inclination triangles as an installation aid, bracing hooks and erosion protection. The system components are supplied pre-assembled at the factory.
TERRABENT sealing steep slope protection
TERRABENT is a sealed earthwork construction with a greenable slope gradient of 70°. It is a combination of the statically effective GREEN TERRAMESH slope stabilisation system and the BENTOMAT geosynthetic clay liner.

Practical example
Rainwater retention basin, Ulm Science Park
The construction of a rainwater retention basin was planned as part of the development of the Science Park III construction site in Ulm. Due to the terrain morphology at the planned location of the basin, part of the basin embankments had to be constructed in a cut, while another part was designed as an embankment structure.
To protect the sealing element from perforation by the mixed-grain substrate, a protective fleece was first laid. The combined clay sealing membrane BENTOMAT GDA CL 1.5 DT was applied to the protective fleece. By combining a plastic sealing sheet with a clay sealing sheet, smaller perforations can be sealed again by a kind of self-healing process. The bentonite mat was followed by a further protective nonwoven fabric and a woven geogrid in the embankment area to prevent the ballast layers from potentially sliding on the waterproofing component parallel to the embankment.
Sustainability
Sustainability is a key issue in the construction industry and is becoming increasingly important. With their versatile application possibilities, geobuilding materials offer ecological and economical solutions with high durability.
Natural erosion control
The increase in extreme weather events can be directly linked to anthropogenic climate change. When planning flood protection structures, the focus should therefore be on choosing sustainable products and low-emission system solutions. The overall energy balance of a structure can be noticeably improved through the use of geobuilding materials, so that valuable resources are conserved, emissions are reduced and less energy is consumed. In many applications, geobuilding materials offer a more ecological solution than conventional construction methods.
Extremely flexible and mouldable
The products have an environmental impact assessment in accordance with M Geok E 2016 and most of them also come with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).
The EPD contains information on the harmful environmental impacts caused during the life cycle of a building product and thus allows a differentiated view of the footprint of the building material.
